Deir el Medineh Spangenhelm Helmet

Deir el Medineh spangenhelm. These beauties with (vegetable-tanned) leather liner from DSC, commercially available from Armamentaria. I. P. Stephenson states in his book "Roman Cavalry Equipment" that the similar helmet displayed at Leiden has a dubious history in that it was sold being worn by an Egyptian mummy! It is this one has been tentatively dated to the 12th Century. It was aparently placed on the head of the mummy to make it more interesting to the purchaser! - Marcus Ulpius Peronis COH I BATAVORVM MCRPF http://www.armamentaria.com/ Aka Adrian Wink
PEOPLES COMMENTS :
  • ADRIAN, I´AM D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-LY INTERESTED. - Virilis/ Jyrki Halme TOXOPHILITE

  • hmmmmmm, that look's interesting! ... May have to add this to my collection!.. Looks the biz to me! ... Nice work!... Good sturdy infantry helm!... Daniyell have certainly made a name for them selves since they appeared a couple of moths ago on Keltica....never heard of them before that! They definately are good craftsmen! ... Well, I just recieved on of these from Ade, and I love it! - Legio XIIII GMV. (Q. Magivs)RMRS Gaius Julius Caesar/ was Marcus/Byron Angel

  • Very interesting indeed! Ade, that is INDEED impressive! - Valerius/Robert Vermaat

  • Hey this looks intresting, it'll be hard to choose between this and an intercisa..... not a bad price range at all...That looks fantastic, how long 'till Christmas?... Looks fantastic, I'm seriously considering getting one of these, probably not for a little while though. - Dave Bell/Secvndvs

  • When this is approved, there's a new Weisenau type coming! Something VERY unusual I promise! Definately something that will stand out from all the 'cookie-cutters'... The DSC craftsmen are very good at following drawings! All credit to DSC! - Marcus Ulpius Peronis COH I BATAVORVM MCRPF Aka Adrian Wink

  • The helmet looks very promising... I really like them... It looks great. BTW it is nice to see the different stages of manufacture... very informative. It looks stunning. Especially like the picture of the helmet being worn. - Martijn

  • I'm interested too. - Ivan Perelló

  • woah sweet man. i love that helmet - Tiberius Claudius Lupus Chuck Russell Keyser,WV, USA

  • Looks promising ! Um... Oh... Gulp ! ... So Adrian, bring it on & how can I pay & where!!??... If our suggestions are taken into consideration like this with other gear too I think we will see plenty of happy customers in the future ! In my opinion there is definitely room for a producer between XXXXXXXX and the makers of more expensive "made-to-measure" unique items. The problem with XXXXXXXX (anyway still the best mass-producer by far) is that their gear is uniform and therefore made to fit the hypotethical average customer. Custom fit gear tends to be a bit on the expensive side and the delivery times / communication in general can be bit difficult some times. Maybe Daniyal Steelcrafts can fill this empty place between them; listening to the individual needs of the customer and still keeping the prices / delivery times acceptable?- Virilis/ Jyrki Halme TOXOPHILITE

  • Adrian, At 200 Pounds your helmet is a bargin compared to this one! XXXXXXX - Gaius Marcius Gracilis AKA: Mark Headlee

  • Looks fantastic! I think it's perfect the way it is now! A very good replica! This is very impressive! - Jef Pinceel a.k.a. Marcvs Mvmmivs Falco LEG XI CPF COH V (BELGIUM)
wow i love it! - Tiberius Claudius Lupus Chuck Russell Keyser,WV, USA

  • That's a seriously well done repro. Hats off to Daniyal. I think it's the best mass production model I've ever seen, so hopefully good quality control will keep it that way. - TARBICvS/Jim Bowers CALIGATvS CAVORTvS NINIvS

  • Looks superb, good initiative. - Ste Kenwright Salvianus A member of Comitatus Late Roman Experimental Re-enactment Group My Re-enactment Livejournal

  • Very nice looking Helmet. Well done Peroni/Daniyal - Jvrjenivs Peregrinvs Magnvs A.K.A. Jurjen Draaisma

  • ... the craftsmanship looks excellent, ... I would definitely buy this helmet. - Andreas Baede

  • Dear Jyrki, You will be most pleased to know that the kind gentlemen at Daniyal Steel Crafts have taken notice of your feaky head, and have taken pity on you by making a special helmet just for you! (They did also offer to perform the required surgery ) 16cm x 22cm will that do for you??? No Joke Jyrki, They are making one especially for you right now! - Marcus Ulpius Peronis COH I BATAVORVM MCRPF Aka Adrian Wink

New Design Auxiliary Shields

Both patterns based on the dimensions of the Valkenburg oval shield cover. These are linen faced and backed. Roman shields of the first C tended to have brass edging (lots of that has been found). One will be infantry and the other a cavalry design. Both designs obviously are taken from Trajan's Column. They are available for anyone that wants to use them as an alternative to the other off-the-shelf patterns that we sell offered by XXXXXXXX. The ESG in the UK have a section of auxiliaries that use a similar design to the red one but in very dark blue. LEG XI in the US have the blue version of the cavalry shield. Their Centurio and their shield painter (a lady artist) let us use their interpretation of the graphic. Here's the finished shields.. An excellent job of painting by Daniyal Steel Crafts. - Marcus Ulpius Peronis COH I BATAVORVM MCRPF http://www.armamentaria.com/
PEOPLES COMMENTS :
  • Hey those are pretty nice! Great designs! - Legio XIIII GMV. (Q. Magivs)RMRS Gaius Julius Caesar/ was Marcus/Byron Angel
  • Really nice. I think, my group need completly new shields, The right one looks like a modification from the cavalryshield in scene CIV. The left one looks like modification from the auxillaryshield in scene CXXVIII. Both from Trajanscolumn. Brass edgings are always better as rawhide i think! On my second scutum, i used stitched on rawhide, thats terrible work which last hour after hour! 2 Days later, nearly half of the rawhide ripped of when i make a training fight!- Optio Marcus Athenobarbus COH. IIII VINDELICORUM Marcus-Gerd Hock
  • Excellent job - Jef Pinceel a.k.a. Marcvs Mvmmivs Falco LEG XI CPF COH V (BELGIUM)
  • They are indeed nice shields and I have posted a photo on the Roman Shield Yahoo Group with a link to your website. - John Kaler MSG, USA Retired Member Legio V (Tenn, USA)
  • Peroni's dimensions accord well with the mid-1 century AD Valkenberg shield covers, which were made for flat oval shields - Paullus Scipio/Paul McDonnell-Staff

Authentic Folding Frying Pan

Folding Frying Pan by Daniyal Steel Crafts for http://www.armamentaria.com/ There are folding pan finds from a lot of places including military sites. Ours is based on various such finds. Caerleon pan dated to 3rd Century. Its what ours is primarily based upon, in particular the hinge and shape of the pan with the pour spout. The small oval pan is a reconstruction made by my friend Steve Wagstaff!

PEOPLE'S COMMENTS :

  • Looks quite authentic, not that I have seen any real ones. Would go well with the little Roman Leatherman!! That sort of thing would fit neatly over a pole carried over ones shoulder..... - Legio XIIII GMV. (Q. Magivs)RMRS Gaius Julius Caesar/ was Marcus/Byron Angel

  • What price were you thinking of asking (so that I can start saving my Christmas money now!!!) - Gaius Marcius Gracilis AKA: Mark Headlee

  • wow that's reaaaaallly cool Peroni! I can't believe how 'old' that kind of design is now. Where was the original found? very cool work, too. - Andy Volpe - aka - Titus Vulpius Dominicus

Carnuntum Helmet

Here’s the rough partial translation of Carnuntum Jahrbuch 2005, pp 122-123, written by Dr. Robert Fahr..
"As far as still being recognizable, it was originally an ordinary infantry helmet of the Weisenau / Imperial Gallic G-H type. Though some very exceptional modifications were made on that piece: It was completely lacking of all mounted parts (ornamental rivets, brow guard, cheek guards and so on). Only the remains of the rivets serving to attach the cheek guards and the brow guard were visible. The neck guard was cut off. The helmet’s bowl was rammed in the longitudinal direction. The material accrued by that treatment was folded/grooved in the area of the ear cut-outs.
The surface of the bowl was covered with a fur-like material. The rim was edged with an approx. 3 cm wired stripe of leather. Below this leather-stripe four tube-like remains of quills were found in the forehead area. A sure reconstruction of this undoubtedly highly exotic appearance of this helmet isn’t possibly any more. The helmet might have a nearly cap-like look when being deposited."
Carnuntum Helmet, the production of DSC for Armamentaria, from a private collection that was displayed at Carnuntum recently. Unique in that it has a simple copper alloy bowl in the fashion of the Gallic 'I' but with none of the fancy bits such as embossed eyebrows, decorative rivet bosses and embossed steps on the occipital and neck guard. The only embellishment is a crest spike.
This is really unusual in that it has contrasting iron cheek guards with brass edging. The brass and iron combination it looks stunning, and really stand apart from the other Gallic and italic types out on the field.

(btw we have not adding the brass appliqué to the right cheek guard)

The helmet is dated to the late first century, but helmets of this type can be seen on Tropaeum Traiani (with a crest finial). The Gaillic and Italic styles of the first century were probably still in use toward the later second century.

PEOPLE'S CPOMMENTS :

  • The bowl shape looks good, it is deep enough like the original. Also the brass of the bowl looks thick which is also good. Wow Shocked ! Especially the bowl looks spectacular! - Virilis/ Jyrki Halme TOXOPHILITE
  • It looks great.I think i have finally chosen my imperial helmet, hehehe... Impressive...i want one of these, Awesome helmet, man. I'll be waiting for it when you receive units... - Israel M. Sánchez Mulae Mari- Legio VIIII Hispana
  • Fan-f*****g-tastic! The bottom of the occupital is level with the bottom of the ear!!!!!Makes a change! At last! Great work. When you see a photo like that, you realize what it was all about Very Happy Protection of the skull without hindering the neck. It's the best non-custom shape yet that I've seen. It has the ideal proportional form that correlates to ACTUAL Roman helmets. Took delivery of one of these beauties this morning. What can I say? Unique, beautifully made, superb shaping and proportions. A great reconstruction sat proudly on the shelf. - TARBICvS/Jim Bowers CALIGATvS CAVORTvS NINIvS

Imperial Italic 'G' (Theilenhofen)

http://daniyalhelmets.blogspot.com/

Exclusive to Armamentaria, this second Century helmet is copied from an original found at Theilenhofen (Germany) on the site of the castrum of Cohors III Bracaraugustanorum, which was a mixed cohort of Infantry and Cavalry guarding the Raetian limes. The deposition date of the helmet is 189AD although the helmet could have seen a great deal of service prior to the deposition date. The original is now on display at Munich.
