These are described as style Zwammerdam and are dated 140 - 170 AD. It's distribution is Northern provinces and Antonine Wall sites. The shoes are described by Carol van Driel-Murray in the excellent article in the book Stepping through Time.

The usual style is a shoe, but ankleboots have also been found, so we decided to have a go at both types. Smaller size shoes are also good for lady's and childeren, as most finds were for small sizes! They have been found both nailed and sewn, so we had the boots nailed and the shoes sewn. The helmet dates from the second half of the first Century. Yes it is. Mid to late first Century. A type not previously commercially available, but a beauty nonetheless! I'm certain that DSC will do their usual stunning and accurate reconstruction of it too. The original is from Hungary but currently on display in the UK. Interesting eyebrows, the whole helmet flows. The angle of the guard looks ideal for stopping downward blows. And I like the fact the neck guard seam seems to be totaly invisible. Unlike the Gallic 'H' I received. This is definitely a winner. - Gaius Julius Caesar/Byron Angel

These were used as the Roman legionary’s signaculum, a lead amulet given to soldiers as a sign of their induction. This is attested in the 3rd century martyrdom of St. Maximilian, a young Christian who was forced to join the army but refused due to his piety.

The Martyrdom of St. Maximilian is a wonderful and touching story.

SOTW Roman Tent Stakes

The Latest BRUTALLY AUTHENTIC SOTW Item!!

These four Roman tent pegs are the replicas of the original finds, discovered in the Kupa river near Sisak and now held in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Croatia (the originals are published in Militaria Sisciensia—Finds of the Roman military equipment from Sisak in the holdings of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb). A large peg is 291mm in length, and is similar to the type documented among the finds from Numantia, which would speak in favor of its early date. Three smaller specimens are 181mm, 171mm, and 152mm in length. They are of the same type, which was in regular use already from the Republican period and throughout the 1st century AD. Similar pegs of both types are depicted in RME, page 70, fig. 35, items 5-9.

The Roman army made prolific use of tents, so the discovery of a multitude of tent pegs on numerous sites is not surprising. It should be mentioned that even though such artifacts are normally considered tent pegs, that was probably not their only function. They could have also been used as pegs for tethering horses, and perhaps as the tools for marking the camp layout. These are special order items so allow 3-4 months for delivery for now, we will stock them eventually! Throw away those modern pegs!!!!

This will be made with chinstrap rings instead of the outside fastening studs Since the original cheek pieces where not found it is not known which fastening system was used originally. Also later refits to rings were likely common as helmets seemed to stay in service for a long time with the Legions and even longer when handed down to Auxillia troops as newer style helmets were adopted. I believe the Nimeigen version of the Gallic A was found in an possible Auxillia context. …. We want to get this helmet historical correct AND have the features that you guys want….. I would like to have the helmets sold with the following features; Double ring on the neck guard back Ring on each side of the neck guard Stud and ring combination on the cheek pieces (These rings will be removable for those who just don't want to cover them with cheek piece liners. Linen and Leather cheek piece liners (Buyer glues his choice on) 15 piece felt liner liner set 5 piece Thick Liner and 2 5 piece thin liners Linen and leather liner sets 5 piece Leftovers can be used on other helmets!!!! Double 1/2 inch helmet straps (From Double rings in back to Studs) Adjustable and user installed Simple 1/2 wide Short Chinstrap (Alternative to above) Long Leather tie for use with chin strap rings (Alternate to above)
DSC will probably make several alternate metals helmets and extra large size should be available by special order. Of course I get the FIRST one. - Everyone else will have to get in line!!!!!

The helmet design has both studs and rings with the ring on the inside of the stud fitting- those not liking rings can easily remove them or cover then with the cheek guard lining. In a historical context this can represent a later modification to upgrade the helmet to "current" Legion standards. So everyone can be happy! I am getting my personal helmet with the two additional rings on the neckguard so I can experiment and find out what they may have been used for.

If you look at the Nijmegen face-mask helmets (found at the Kops Plateau, where a (batavian) auxiliary cavalry unit had its camp, they were first hads for sure. Made to measure to their wearer, as is presented in resent studies. And those helmets weren't the cheapest at all! So you're right saying that Auxilia surely could have first hand (and even expensiver) equipment. And another great helmet from Daniyal. Aarrrrgg, I need more money. Good job guys. They're similar, as the Guttmann ones were based on the Nijmegen originals (Nijmegen ones are iron) The Guttman ones are not as wide nor do they have the correct fastening stud on the outer face. They are also too straight up and down the trailing edge IMO. The cusps are deeper on the Nijmegen original too. Robinson's reconstruction is very good… Two others apart from these two. Another from Nijmegen and the fourth from Eich. The only one with surviving cheek guards is the Nijmegen one pictured above. ….. Looking good! … They're doing a grand job! If it is an Augustan -Tiberian helmet (as all Gallic A types seem to be)you can be *almost* certain that it had stud fastenings. And since the ONLY example of a Gallic A cheek piece does have studs, surely it would be more accurate to base it upon the one known find?? … Awesome reconstruction, I see you went for the Nijmegen cheek guard in the end! Deir el Medineh spangenhelm. These beauties with (vegetable-tanned) leather liner from DSC, commercially available from Armamentaria. I. P. Stephenson states in his book "Roman Cavalry Equipment" that the similar helmet displayed at Leiden has a dubious history in that it was sold being worn by an Egyptian mummy! It is this one has been tentatively dated to the 12th Century. Looks promising ! Um... Oh... Gulp ! ... So Adrian, bring it on & how can I pay & where!!??... If our suggestions are taken into consideration like this with other gear too I think we will see plenty of happy customers in the future ! In my opinion there is definitely room for a producer between XXXXXXXX and the makers of more expensive "made-to-measure" unique items. The problem with XXXXXXXX (anyway still the best mass-producer by far) is that their gear is uniform and therefore made to fit the hypotethical average customer. Custom fit gear tends to be a bit on the expensive side and the delivery times / communication in general can be bit difficult some times. New Design Auxiliary Shields

Both patterns based on the dimensions of the Valkenburg oval shield cover. These are linen faced and backed. Roman shields of the first C tended to have brass edging (lots of that has been found). One will be infantry and the other a cavalry design. Both designs obviously are taken from Trajan's Column. They are available for anyone that wants to use them as an alternative to the other off-the-shelf patterns that we sell offered by XXXXXXXX. The ESG in the UK have a section of auxiliaries that use a similar design to the red one but in very dark blue. LEG XI in the US have the blue version of the cavalry shield. Their Centurio and their shield painter (a lady artist) let us use their interpretation of the graphic. Here's the finished shields.. Carnuntum Helmet

Here’s the rough partial translation of Carnuntum Jahrbuch 2005, pp 122-123, written by Dr. Robert Fahr..
"As far as still being recognizable, it was originally an ordinary infantry helmet of the Weisenau / Imperial Gallic G-H type. Though some very exceptional modifications were made on that piece: It was completely lacking of all mounted parts (ornamental rivets, brow guard, cheek guards and so on). Only the remains of the rivets serving to attach the cheek guards and the brow guard were visible. The neck guard was cut off. The helmet’s bowl was rammed in the longitudinal direction. The material accrued by that treatment was folded/grooved in the area of the ear cut-outs.

The surface of the bowl was covered with a fur-like material. The rim was edged with an approx. 3 cm wired stripe of leather. Below this leather-stripe four tube-like remains of quills were found in the forehead area. A sure reconstruction of this undoubtedly highly exotic appearance of this helmet isn’t possibly any more. The helmet might have a nearly cap-like look when being deposited."

Carnuntum Helmet, the production of DSC for Armamentaria, from a private collection that was displayed at Carnuntum recently. Unique in that it has a simple copper alloy bowl in the fashion of the Gallic 'I' but with none of the fancy bits such as embossed eyebrows, decorative rivet bosses and embossed steps on the occipital and neck guard. The only embellishment is a crest spike.

This is really unusual in that it has contrasting iron cheek guards with brass edging. The brass and iron combination it looks stunning, and really stand apart from the other Gallic and italic types out on the field.

(btw we have not adding the brass appliqué to the right cheek guard)

The helmet is dated to the late first century, but helmets of this type can be seen on Tropaeum Traiani (with a crest finial). The Gaillic and Italic styles of the first century were probably still in use toward the later second century.

Exclusive to Armamentaria, this second Century helmet is copied from an original found at Theilenhofen (Germany) on the site of the castrum of Cohors III Bracaraugustanorum, which was a mixed cohort of Infantry and Cavalry guarding the Raetian limes. The deposition date of the helmet is 189AD although the helmet could have seen a great deal of service prior to the deposition date. The original is now on display at Munich.

Hi everyone,
some of you may remember that last year, when Keltica first started working on Keltica Authentic kit, we came up with a first version of a Republican scutum and it needed a severe upgrade. So, we went away and with Matt Lukes help came up with this new version. Now, these are the first photo's we have of it and its taken 8 months. We know there are a couple of things still not to the absolute criteria of the original designs we sent them, but I wanted to show you what it looks like. Its based on the remains from Syria and I'm happy with it, there are a couple of minor tweeks that need to be made but that's in Matt's head. Keltica's going to be kitting ourselves out with these for the Xth Legion we represent.

Chain Mail in Roman History
The Celts pioneered the usage of linked wire rings to form a flexible form of armor since approximately the middle of the 1st millennium BC. After some attested usage by Greek armies during the Hellenistic period, the Romans adopted chain mail as their optimal form of infantry armor shortly before the Second Punic War (218-202 BC). The evidence for its use is both artistic, such as the so-called Altar of Domitius Ahenobarbus, which shows mail-clad legionaries ca. 100 BC, and also literary. The historian Polybius, in his discussions of the Roman legions during the 2nd century BC, states that the wealthier legionaries were able to afford chain mail armor to complete their panoplies (Histories VI, 23). According to the artistic evidence, the lorica hamata of that time was cut very much like the Greek linothorax, with sleeveless torso, ending mid-thigh, and having a shoulder doubling that added protection to the torso against overhead blows. In the early Imperial period, the artwork attests to the addition of short sleeves to the armor, protecting the deltoid and upper arm of the wearer. In the second century, the shoulder doubling appears to have disappeared, as seen in the artwork, and the sleeves grew in length. While the use of segmental plate armor was quite widespread, chainmail never disappeared, due to its versatility and overall protection. Even against the dreaded war scythe, the Dacian falx, many of Emperor Trajan’s soldiers appear to have been equipped with chainmail, as seen on the Adamklissi monument. Roman non-citizen soldiers, or auxiliaries, appear to have worn chainmail almost exclusively, although their mail shirts are usually shown as lacking shoulder doubling and as sometimes having a dagged (or zig-zag) hem, as seen at right.

We offer the Most Historically Accurate Manufacture
Some Celtic mail was fashioned of rings butted at their closure. Roman mail was predominantly constructed of round-wire riveted rings interspersed with solid punched or welded rings of a flat cross-section. Up until recently, commercially available versions have featured only butted links, as it was too expensive to offer fully accurate Roman mail. Daniyal Steel Crafts was the first to offer interwoven riveted and stamped styles of mail. So, when they contacted us to collaborate, we were honored. Other commercial versions that are currently available are still produced in galvanized steel, which was unavailable to the Romans. Our versions are produced in blackened or oil finishes, to maintain our high standards of accuracy. Our version conforms most nearly to the pattern in use during the middle Republic to early Imperial period (3rd century BC to 1st/2nd centuries AD), sporting short sleeves and shoulder doubling.
For reenactors willing to spend a bit more and compromise less, we offer a new Roman mail shirt of highly accurate construction--that is, riveted round-wire links interspersed with flat solid rings. The studs and chest-hooks, are based on an actual archaeological find. Other sizes and patterns may be available on request. Our shirt also comes with leather-lined shoulder doubling. In the time of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, segmented plate armor, commonly known by the modern name lorica segmentata, was pioneered for usage by the average legionary, allowing protection and cost-effectiveness to go hand in hand, and producing modular armor that could be easily manufactured and easily adjusted to fit a variety of individuals.
From the first century AD onward, the segmentata would undergo numerous uncharted changes by armorers and military strategists, most of which are lost to us. The Corbridge type, named after an important armor cache found in Corbridge, England in 1964, was the most widely used and was in service the longest. The Newstead type, named after the initial find of armor fragments in Newstead, Scotland in the early 1900s, entered widespread use in the second quarter of the 2nd century AD, perhaps as a feature of the Emperor Hadrian’s plans to revamp and update the army (although early versions of the Newstead cuirass may be shown in the reliefs decorating Trajan's Column, carved ca. AD 114-118). The Newstead was far more robust than the Corbridge, incorporating thick shoulder pieces that could withstand the puncturing capabilities of the dreaded Dacian falx. Its girdle section incorporated male-through-female style loop fasteners that were more rigid and protective than the Corbridge ‘laced’ types, which could easily be cut by an attacker’s blade. Yet the Newstead still maintained the level of articulation and versatility of the Corbridge, while providing advanced levels of protection. The only drawback to this type of armor was the fact that it could not be adjusted for the size of the wearer as easily as the Corbridge. The maximum girth was dictated by the circumference of the girdle section and modular pieces would need to be changed out for wearers of different sizes. Nevertheless, the Newstead may have undergone several variant adaptations during its century long tenure, but continued in usage until the second half of the 3rd century AD, a testament to its formidability.
The Scholarship and the Evidence
While the Corbridge may be the most widely studied of all the types of lorica segmentata, the Newstead type has only recently emerged from the mists of history in something like its original form. In 1905, numerous pieces from a shoulder assembly were found at the excavation of the headquarters building at Newstead, Scotland. These fragments were identified and named by the famous H. Russell Robinson. Earlier, in 1899, fragments had been found at Carnuntum that would later be identified as belonging to the Newstead type. Since then, numerous other fragments belonging to this type have been identified from around the Mediterranean. Robinson believed the Newstead fragments belonged to a stripped-down, simplified version of the Corbridge segmentata. He undertook a reconstruction of the Newstead type, and for two decades, his version had been considered to be the most plausible. But the discovery of new pieces of the puzzle, particularly a complete girth section unearthed in Stilffried, Austria, made it clear that the Newstead type differed markedly from Robinson's vision. Rather than being simplified and stripped-down, the Newstead type was in fact more complex and labor-intensive than the old Corbridge type. Using the latest evidence, Dr. M. C. Bishop began work on an alternate reconstruction in the early 2000s, and published his findings in the Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies (JRMES). However, his blueprints were only conceptual and had never been reproduced in actual steel.
In 2002, our own Dr. Arik Greenberg, in conjunction with his work with the Legion Six Historical Foundation, produced a steel version of Bishop’s V1.01 Newstead. It was widely publicized among the reenactor communities as a major coup - both for Bishop, and for Greenberg. Dr. Greenberg’s findings and notes about the reconstruction have been published since then in JRMES 12/13. However, Greenberg’s curiosity was peaked. Noticing several discrepancies between Bishop’s reconstruction and the most recent archaeological evidence, Greenberg decided to revise the blueprints once more, basing his next version on Bishop’s basic plans, but incorporating the newest archaeological evidence, some of which has yet to be published. Through intense study of archaeological material from around the Roman empire, as well as the work of other scholars such as H. Russell Robinson, Peter Connolly, M. C. Bishop, Dr. Greenberg has been able to produce the most accurate reconstruction of the Newstead type lorica segmentata since its usage by the Roman legionaries of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. In this new version, incorporating the most commonly found elements from Newstead type fragments, Dr. Greenberg has produced a truly superior reconstruction of the armor most widely used the late Hadrianic and Antonine periods. His newest findings will soon be published in another academic journal.
Our Version
Despite the fact that Robinson’s earlier reconstruction of the Newstead have been surpassed by Bishop’s, and now Greenberg’s, more accurate reconstructions, many companies persist in manufacturing and marketing the Robinson design, due to the lack of a viable commercial alternative. Until recently, only a few custom armorers offered (including Dr. Greenberg himself) offered an accurate Newstead cuirass built to order, at prices up to $1,500. But thanks to our exclusive agreement with Daniyal Steelcrafts of India, we are now able to offer a beautifully crafted and highly accurate Newstead cuirass at a price of only $550!
The Daniyal cuirass is meticulously modeled on Dr. Greenberg's improved prototype cuirass, according to his exacting set of standards. It is not only a collectors item, but a work of art. It is made of 14, 16, and 18 gauge (1.8, 1.5, and 1.2 mm) mild steel, approximating that used by the Romans. The plates are hand cut and its pieces are lovingly fitted and finished to the finest replication of ancient world craftsmanship. That is to say that while not all surfaces and edges will bear a machine-cut look, they will give the wearer the feel of donning a cuirass made by the finest armorers of the Roman Empire.
The Daniyal cuirass comes in three chest sizes, designed to fit U.S. jacket sizes 38-40, 42-44, and 46-48, with girth sections sized accordingly. Please specify your jacket and waist measurement when ordering. Keep in mind that the Newstead cuirass is somewhat less forgiving than the Corbridge models in the size department, because of the way the girth hoops are fashioned. Nevertheless, some mixing and matching of chest and girth sections and custom "tweaking" may be possible to improve the fit.

The ancient Roman imperial legions outfitted their troops with progressively more formidable and versatile forms of armor. For quite some time the majority of infantry were outfitted with chainmail, adopted from Italy’s Celtic neighbors who had been wearing such armor for centuries. Both the Greeks and Romans had utilized breastplates, or muscle cuirasses, of bronze that protected the entire torso, but such armor was costly and difficult to make, requiring that it be specifically tailored to the individual who would wear it. Other nations had seen limited use of strips or bands of metal attached to one another and employed as a body defense. In the time of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, segmented plate armor, which is commonly known by the modern name developed by scholars, lorica segmentata, was pioneered for usage by the average legionary. This form of armor allowed protection and cost-effectiveness to go hand in hand, producing modular armor that could be easily manufactured and easily adjusted to fit a variety of individuals.

This version is based on archaeological reconstructions of a variety of fragments, focused largely on the breastplate found in Kalkriese in 1994. This piece was associated with the Varus disaster of 9 AD, in which the Roman general P. Quintilius Varus commanded three doomed legions that were ambushed and massacred by Germanic Tribesmen in the Teutoburger Forest. This find revolutionized our understanding of the development of the lorica segmentata, providing evidence that such armor existed and was employed at least a generation earlier than previously thought. Various finds of fittings and random plate fragments have been found throughout the former Roman Empire and have since been linked to Kalkriese-type armor.
In emulation of the original, the breastplate of our version is forged of 2.3 mm mild steel, providing excellent defense against direct blows to the region of the heart. The mid-collar plate is also forged of the same thick material. The upper shoulder guard and back plates are shaped from 16 gauge steel and the remainder of the armor is fashioned from 18 gauge steel in emulation of other examples of lorica segmentata. Like many examples of ancient Roman armor, such graduated levels of thickness provided the best defense for the most vital organs, while ensuring overall weight savings while still giving excellent protection to the extremities and the rest of the torso.

The Kalkriese breastplate was extraordinarily well-crafted, even to the point of being lined with thin brass piping. We have edged both breastplates and the lower edge of the bottom girth hoop in brass, providing a beautiful custom-tailored look not found on the later, more mass-produced Corbridge model. Following the speculative reconstruction of M.C. Bishop, the girth closures are all fastened with straps and buckles, rather than the simpler tie loops found on the Corbridge, or the tongue-and-slot system of the Newstead lorica segementata.
The Imperium Ancient Armory Kalkriese is made by Daniyal Steelcrafts of India, patterned meticulously on the reproduction first made by our own scholar-turned-armorer Dr. Arick Greenberg in early 2007. It is made of 12, 14, 16, and 18 gauge (2.3, 1.8, 1.5, and 1.2 mm) mild steel, approximating that used by the Romans. The plates are hand cut and its pieces are lovingly fitted and finished to the finest replication of ancient world craftsmanship. That is to say that while not all surfaces and edges will bear a machine-cut look, they will give the wearer the feel of donning a cuirass made by the finest armorers of the Roman Empire.
The Kalkriese cuirass presently comes in three size ranges, designed to fit U.S. jacket sizes 38-40, 42-44, and 44-46, with girth sections sized accordingly. There is some room for adjustment on this cuirass, due to the use of straps and buckles to hold both the upper sections and girth hoops together, and a slight amount of opverlap on the girth hoops. Some custom "tweaking" may also be possible to accommodate harder-to-fit sizes. Please provide us with both a jacket size and waist measurement.

Corbridge 'A' Lorica Segmentata, c.a. AD 30 - 250

This is the renowned Corbridge type (Variant A) lorica segmentata. The ancient Roman imperial legions outfitted their troops with progressively more formidable and versatile forms of armor. For quite some time the majority of infantry were outfitted with chainmail, adopted from Italy’s Celtic neighbors, who had been wearing such armor for centuries. Both the Greeks and Romans had utilized breastplates, or muscle cuirasses, of bronze that protected the entire torso, but such armor was costly and difficult to make, requiring that it be specifically tailored to the individual who would wear it. Other nations had seen limited use of strips or bands of metal attached to one another and employed as a body defense. In the time of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, segmented plate armor, commonly known by the modern name developed by scholars, lorica segmentata, was pioneered for usage by the average legionary, allowing protection and cost-effectiveness to go hand in hand, and producing modular armor that could be easily manufactured and easily adjusted to fit a variety of individuals.

It is possible that the widespread use of this armor by legionaries was first conceptualized during the revolt of Florus and Sacrovir, in 21 AD, in which Roman legionaries found themselves sorely outclassed by a band of rogue gladiators known as Crupellari, who wore segmented plate armor over their entire bodies. As a result, the legions, recognizing the formidability of such a defense, began to explore the usage of segmented plate armor for use by their rank and file. But attesting to usage even earlier than this incident, fragments of legionary segmented plate armor have been found in excavations of sites in Germany that date to the early Augustan period.

During the second half of the first century AD, the segmentata would undergo numerous uncharted changes by armorers and military strategists, most of which are lost to us. But one type of segmentata stands out amid the fragments of history, due to its widespread and long-term use - the Corbridge Type. In 1964, a hoard of armaments was excavated in Corbridge, England (lending its name to the type), which included sections of as many as twelve different sets of this type of armor. Since then, the Corbridge type has been one of the most widely studied forms of armor in the field of ancient military studies. Countless other fragments belonging to this type have been identified from around the Mediterranean. Through intense study of archaeological material from around the Roman Empire, scholars such as H. Russell Robinson, Peter Connolly, M. C. Bishop, and others, have contributed to the accurate reconstruction of this type of armor. As such, the Corbridge type was also in service the longest of any of the various known types of lorica segmentata, recent scholarly literature claiming that it was continually in use well into the third century AD.

This version of the Corbridge A was developed by us in conjunction with our partners at Daniyal Steel Crafts. We consider it to be the most historically accurate version of the Corbridge A commercially available. We have corrected the problems evident in the most common commercially available models of the Corbridge A. Since this was taken, we have corrected a few manufacturing errors. we will be offering all of our models of lorica segmentata in a variety of sizes. As for the taller individuals, we may have to produce a custom version for them. Imperium and DSC can distinguish themselves is by carving out a niche market and providing what other companies (be they dealers or manufacturers) have not been able or willing to provide.

I just want to add my comments about DSC's Corbidge A segmentata sold by Imperium. I have seen and tried on the prototype pictured above, it's size 46 and fit perfectly over my tunic, subarmalis and focale with no gaps. The XXXXXXX version I had would not close when I had all my gear on. I'm 5' 10'' tall and the shoulder units fit well over the girdle sections with no gaps when buckled on. In my opinion, the DSC Corbridge A is far superior and more authentic than others i've seen. Well worth the price. I will recommend these to new members of my group and will be getting one as soon as they are available. - Maius/Bill

Original with an iron core, applied brass sheathing (tinned on the crown section and neck guard flange). The cheek plates tinned and have the 5 decorative rivet bosses. The original helmet has a series of 5 pairs of holes running front to back across the crown of the skull indicating where a crest box was fitted. This will be constructed (Probably with yellow horsehair as per Arrian's description). In the UK it's affectionately known as the bicycle bell helmet as the domes look just like cycle bells!
